Elizabeth Taylor’s Jewels Break Auction Records

We all knew the stories of Elizabeth Taylors Jewels, made famous if not only for their gloriousness of size, rarity and provence but by the romantic grandeur bestowed upon her by Richard Burton and her desire to own fabulous pieces.

This past Tuesday, the iconic actress' famous pearls and diamonds sold for roughly $116 million at Christies, oblitarating the record of the previous single collection back in 1987 of the Duchess of Windsor's jewels.

Notably amongst the collection was a 16th century pearl that once belonged to Mary Tudor of England and Spanish queens Margarita and Isabel. Richard Burton purchased the jewel in 1969 for $37,000 an outrageous price at the time, however it sold for a record $11,842,500, beating its estimated $2-$3million price!  

Some of Burtons other great gifts to Taylor included a 33.19-carat diamond bought  in 1968 which sold for $8,818,500 to South Korean hotel conglomerate Eland World which will go on display in one of Eland World’s hotels.

Other pieces includes The Taj Mahal Diamond, yet another Burton to Taylor Gift for her 40th birthday and a Van Cleef & Arpels Ruby & Diamond ring given to her for Christmas in 1968.

Christie's were amazed at the auction which has set numerous records. The sale was still continuing with some of Taylor's haute couture

June is Pearl Month

Pearls have been a gem of choice for centuries, and still has a "magical" aspect about them today.

They are the only gemstone that comes naturally from a living creature, and needs no intervention by man to show of it's luminous beauty.

Freshwater pearls are now almost always "farmed" known as cultured pearls, they are started off by introducing an irritant (speck of dirt) to an oyster and the oyster does the rest by releasing layers and layers of nacre, that nacre then hardens and creates a beautiful original pearl. The bigger the pearl the longer the oyster had to keep depositing nacre.

We love pearls and offer this advise, let them be the last thing you put on before you go out and the first thing you take off when you get home, hairspray and perfume can dull the beauty of pearls, so be kind to them.

Oscars 2011

Oh the Oscars and the glamarous people that attend.
This year was no exception, the stars put on another stella
performance, with gowns and suits to wow.

2011 Rushed On In

And so it did. 2011 seemed to me at least to get here in a VERY big hurry - it's totally amazing that at one moment what felt like the delightful days of summer should have turned at first to fall, then winter and here we are in a New Year.

As we look forward to Spring - resolutions set - a focused mind and a determination to live 2011 just a bit better than 2010!

We at Jewelry To Adore, have been taking stock - no not of just the jewelry but metaphorically speaking - after all if not now when?

We have a dream about seeing women and men, adorned in our wonderful jewelry of course - why wouldn't we. But, what we really would like for 2011 is to hear from you our readers, topics that make us laugh, cry and the ones that make us go hmmn, after all we are all human and those stories are what make it feel especially blessed in being able to send you the jewelry that will be the gifts of the Birthdays, Anniversaries, Mothers & Fathers Days, Graduations, Thank Yous and Whatevers throughout the coming year.
